I've been looking for ways to really say how I feel about mobile phones these days and for the first time, I found someone else who might be in the same line as I am. I've used many models of "latest" phones, from Sony Ericsson to Nokia. Everytime, I've bought those phones because I was interested in developing applications for them (which I finally never did because with studies and work, I never got the time). Anyways, as Russell says, unless someone comes up with something really innovative for mobiles phones to make people use them as they would their laptop computers, there's really no point to it. I've lately got so bored of my phone (had the Nokia Ngage) that I went to buy a very low-end one (Samsung SGH-X430). And not only my new phone is low end, but I make sure it stays out of my view for the whole day so that I won't have to be staring at it and wondering whether something's gonna happen just because I'm looking at it.
I don't know how many people like me there are in the world. But think about it... if everybody started to get bored of their phones because they couldn't do anything more interesting apart from making phone calls although marketeers worldwide claim that mobility is the best thing that ever happened... well... I guess we will have to be looking at the next upcoming "super" technology...
But again, that's just my opinion. Who knows, maybe tomorrow, mobile phones will be interesting again!
LATER THAT NIGHT:
I have to say and I feel really ashamed of it: I haven't visited Apple.com for the past month and half. Don't get me wrong though: I've been updating OS X on my Powerbook. Just that I never felt the need to visit the website or to read anything Apple. I was too engrossed in programming and working with Linux that it totally got out of my mind. Today I read a few blogs, saw a few "apple-olistic" words I never heard before and decided to go have a look at what's going on. And boy, I've never looked this surprise since the beginning of 2005: my jaw literally almost dropped!
And Apple did it again and again! God, if there's an innovation award for January 2005, and I would love Apple to get it. Let's see what they've got in store for us:
- The IpodShuffle starting at US$99! This thing is a beauty! I never felt like getting an Ipod. Besides, I already had the Powerbook 12 inches alumnium, what did I need a portable music player for? But for about a 100 bucks, there is no way on earth I am missing this. I think I already know what my next tech purchase is going to be!
- Almost everytime I talked about how wonderful anything Apple was, people would always reply: "yeah, but they're too expensive!". Well if you ever dreamt of getting yourself a Mac but never felt like spending a lot of money for it, the Mac Mini is for you! Boy, have you read the specs of that sexy machine? I can't wait to get my hands on one of those and write a review here. But I am already thinking, if it's Apple, it's a heck of a machine!
I just checked the ZA Store and I don't think those are for sale yet in South Africa. But I will be checking and really can't wait to get my hands on the IpodShuffle!
MUCH LATER THAT NIGHT:
I'm tired, had a long day and I think I need some sleep. I spent a few minutes looking at Java today. The last time I really delt with that language was about a year and half ago, maybe more. But one way or the other, I have to go back to it, see what's new and study it so hard I can have my brain smoking out. Anyways, tomorrow's Friday and I've got the whole weekend for me and my lovely keyboard: we will have some work to do old chap!
