Recently, or should I say since the beginning of this year, I have been looking into applying for a software engineering job at Google. Since I am quite busy with all the assignments and exams at the university, I only dedicate one or two days to this per month. Note that Google is not the only place I would like to work, any place that's fun and where focus is on solving serious/fun and rewarding problems will do.
Anyways, The biggest question that anyone wanting to apply for a software engineer job at Google would ask themselves is: what does it take to become a "Google Software Engineer". While searching on the web earlier this morning, I stumbled upon a joke on the following website: http://blog.outer-court.com/forum/36360.html by Philipp Lenssen (credit where it's due).
It says "Your perfect Google job application" and goes as follows:
Hello Google,
I'm a fan of your company and would like to work with you. I'm 23 years old. I've started building my own computer at the age of 5, which coincidentally was also the year I learned programming BASIC. I quickly moved on to more advanced languages like C++, SmallTalk, and Lisp, but then briefly lost interest in programming to get heavily involved in advanced maths during the age of 8-10. I've then started maintaining my own internet server, before I developed a fast MySQL replacement in assembly language, my second hobby (my first is Sudoku, the variant with 99 squares for each row). During my teenage years, I've led a team of neighborhood geeks to build a man-like robot, but it unfortunately ran away looking for its father. I kept a software copy of the robot's brain though, in fact, it's that copy which writes this email for me. Hope you take me!
Yours,
John
It's quite funny I have to admit. But also, I wonder whether it doesn't really take something close to this in order to become a Googler!
Jokes aside, here are a few videos that somehow show what to expect (YouTube links):

Before applying for a job a Google consider the following:
ReplyDeleteAt Google someone washes your clothes, check your health, teeth and you eat whatever you want whenever you want - you even have a bus that transports you to your office, you don't even have to drive or experience any discomfort at all. At the office you have friends that you can play almost any game with whilst "thinking"...
Why on earth would you want to go home?
At home your wife might be a bit grumpy, because she has to wash her clothes, clean the house, make dinner ( not as nice a the food at Google), the traffic on the way home was a bit hectic and your toddler is teething so 'it' is a bit grumpy...
Why on earth would you want to go home?
Ahhh, cause Google has not recruited their Google f**k
assistants yet...
So at the end you will basically go home to get "IT"...right?
So working at Google can potentially KILL your marriage.
The 2nd reason why I think it is not such a good idea to work for Google is because if Google is the ultimate employer, what happens if you after a couple of years in their employ decide to "move on"...
Who is going to employ you after Google?
Potential employers will seriously doubt your abilities after Google - it will be sorta " You can check out but you can not leave"
( We call it belonging to Mapogo in South Africa - LOL!!!)
Last reason...
Google has a totally unrealistic business plan. I don't think business units within Google have to be profitable...really?
So if you can play all day, think up fantastic ideas that never have to be profitable, what are you going to learn about business at Google?
You will, after a couple of years be a divorced, skinny ass brilliant ping pong player, who can think really well about mathematical problems...but whom nobody else will want to employ.
Since you did not learn business skills at Google you won't even be able to start your own business.
But, if you don't have any aspirations of getting serious in any relationship, don't want kids and don't ever want to be an entrepreneur, Google is for you...so tatta...go get your sushi :)
Google job application is the perfect fit for the job we need because Google collects better data searching for the perfect hire. It's a self service application. This application provide us top link for the jobs.
